1790 Census Example: 12312

 

1st digit = (Free white males of 16 years & upward (including heads of families)

2nd digit = (Free white males under 16 years)

3rd digit = (Free white females in including heads of families)

4th digit = (All other free persons. "Free Slaves")

5th digit = (Slaves)

 

The example would break down as follows:

1 male age over 16 years.

2 male age under 16 years.

3 females ages Unknown.

1 Free person, age Unknown.

2 Slaves, ages Unknown.

 

1800 Census Columns:

 

Name of Head of Household. This is usually the husband. If a woman is listed as head of household, she was usually a widow, or a single mother, or a single person raising younger siblings.

1. Number of Free White Males under 10. (age 0-9, or born ca 1790/1800)

2. Number of Free White Males 10 and up but under 16. (age 10-15, or born ca 1784/1790)

3. Number of Free White Males 16 and up but under 26. (age 16-25, or born ca 1774/1784)

4. Number of Free White Males 26 and up but under 45. (age 26-44, or born ca 1755/1774)

5. Number of Free White Males 45 and upwards. (age 45 and older, or born prior to 1755)

6. Number of Free White Females under 10. (age 0-9, or born ca 1790/1800)

7. Number of Free White Females 10 and up but under 16. (age 10-15, or born ca 1784/1790)

8. Number of Free White Females 16 and up but under 26. (age 16-25, or born ca 1774/1784)

9. Number of Free White Females 26 and up but under 45. (age 26-44, or born ca 1755/1774)

10. Number of Free White Females 45 and upwards. (age 45 and older, or born prior to 1755)

11. Number of Free Colored Persons

12. Number Of Slaves
